Women’s Low Sex Drive Causes

Many women around the world suffer from a low libido. There has been a greater demand for products to help improve this, so drug companies have heeded the call. There is a range of different treatment options available, but before you get there, you have to understand what goes wrong in the first place and what causes a low sex drive in women.

Stress can have a profound effect on the body and hamper the desire to have sex and lead to the lack of energy to have sex. This stress often stems from a woman’s list of daily responsibilities. She has to get up and get the kids ready, make breakfast, get herself ready for work, drop the kid off at school, sit in traffic to and from work, endure a demanding day at work and then come home and make supper. It is easy to see how many women would be fatigued at this stage and just not be in the mood.
Changes in the relationship

Relationships undergo regular changes but the big ones can result in a low sex drive in women. Problems in the relationship, usually about money or children can often do this. Another factor is pregnancy and motherhood. During the pregnancy the woman may feel too exhausted to have sex. The abnormal level of prolactin here also plays a role. Then there is the having to take care of the baby once it is born, which affects both partners.
Health conditions

Certain conditions like anxiety and depression can decrease the libido. Poor blood flow can also contribute, and happens with certain conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Some medications are also implicated in decreasing the libido, and unfortunately it is those that are used to treat chronic illness so they cant just be eliminated.

Hormonal imbalance

Maintaining a good balance of hormones in the blood is essential to a good libido. A decrease in oestrogen can decrease the libido, but added to that it leads to vaginal dryness. This occurs in menopause, which is also often accompanied by fatigue, anxiety, impaired concentration and insomnia.

Boosting libido

Boosting your libido will depend on the cause of its decrease. The first thing you have to do is take care of your body. Follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly and get enough sleep. This will help curb the effects of stressful days. Try to avoid smoking, drinking a lot of alcohol and coffee.

If these things still don’t work then there are certain medications available. Some will help treat the physical problems so they will increase libido, increase blood flow to the sexual organs and make sex more pleasurable. Then there are those drugs that aim to balance the hormones in your body, and as such will increase libido. There are also various lotions, creams, pills and patches that contain testosterone, which will increase your sex drive. Other medication aims to address the psychological issues and will help you to de-stress and relax. They are available as herbal or chemical formulations.
