White Kidney Bean Extract

There are many products on the market that contain all sorts of plant extracts. One of the more popular ones being used today is the extract from the white kidney bean.

What is it?

White kidney bean extract, as the name suggests, is obtained from a plant called the white kidney bean plant, scientifically known as the Phaseolus vulgaris. It is usually only found in Europe, Peru and the Indies. It is usually the seeds that are harvested in order to get the benefits out of them. The rest of the plant does have some use as well so it doesn’t go to waste.

White kidney bean has been used for thousands of years as a source of food, and it is only recently that its other benefits have been discovered. The biggest one of all is the fact that it helps you lose fat.

The extract works by blocking the absorption of starch. Starch is a complex compound that is made of a range of simple sugars. What normally happens when you eat starch is that the enzyme known as alpha amylase breaks it down into these simpler compounds. This makes it easier for the sugars to get absorbed into the bloodstream where they are transported to the various tissues in the body and used as energy. Excess sugar is stored as fat for later use. The problem is that it is a lot easier to get sugar to fat than it is to reverse the process.

The extract from the white kidney bean inhibits the alpha amylase enzyme. As such, less sugar will be absorbed into the bloodstream and the less excess sugar you will have. Therefore you wont be as likely to gain weight from fat. The undigested starch is simply cleared out of the body.

How should you use it?

The amount you take should depend on how much weight you want to lose. It should ideally be taken before meals so that it can block some of the starch that you eat. If you find that you are hungry afterwards then you should try using lower amounts. At the same time taking the extract doesn’t mean that you should increase the amount of starch you take in. That would just defeat the purpose of your weight loss. This is a gradual process, and you should always stick to the recommended range. You don’t want to go blocking all your starch at once and having no energy.

Adverse effects

Numerous scientific studies on white kidney bean extract have been done and there are no real adverse effects. The only problems come with taking too much of the extract. The adverse effects in this case are directly related to having inadequate amounts of sugar in the blood and hence having too little energy. These include tiredness, dizziness, impaired concentration and tremors. To avoid this always make sure that you follow the instructions that are detailed at the back of the container.
